In the US: Krispy Kreme unveils whole-wheat doughnut

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc., still recovering from the low-carb diet craze that starved the company’s earnings, unveiled a whole-wheat doughnut Monday. The 100 percent whole-wheat doughnut – with 180 calories – has a caramel flavoring and is covered with the doughnut maker’s original glaze.

This is what happens when “whole grain” is “healthy”…

Under the scheme, cheese gets a red light; avocados get a red light; and a lot of boxed foods (read processed, refined foods) get green lights. One more example of a government pushing processed foods on the public.

    As said before. A donut is a donut. Still full of sugar. As far as the UK traffic light for food, it proves the point that the people of the world are just getting dumber and dumber. No one seems to be able to or wants to read anymore!

    It won’t entice me to by Krispy Kreme. Grains, whole or not, raise my blood sugar. All I can have is one slice of low carb bread or rye cracker per meal. Add the sugar and it’s even worse, not to mention the trans fat it’s cooked in. Still, with the nutritional dogma saying you should eat plenty of whole grains, people will think it’s healthy.

    Unbelievealble! What’s really sad is people will not educate themselves. They will blindly walk into Krispy Kreme, order a whole grain donut, and believe it’s good for them. Then of course people will treat this like they do other “healthy” foods and think: “Hey.. if one is good for me, then several is great!”

    Sad indeed.

    I wonder how long until the AHA grants Krispy Kreme use of their heart-healthy logo on these? Their diet book – The No-Fad Diet – included donuts on the menu!

    The diabetes association will love the new whole-grain donuts. They can then advise us to eat even more wholegrains because they’re so healthy for us and the glazing doesn’t matter because sugar doesn’t cause diabetes….

    I actually don’t have a problem with the ‘traffic’ light system for 2 reasons. One is that it flags sugar as a bad guy (probably because UK doesn’t produce sugar (or corn) and second because it is consumer driven rather than a corporate campaign. Yes, I don’t see fat saturated or otherwise as a problem and sodium does not seem to be a problem for most people. In sum, it’s a small step forward.
